A ring is the piece you see most often: on the steering wheel, around a cup, on the keyboard. That makes it a quiet, constant reminder of whatever it stands for, which is why rings have carried vows, family seals and good-luck symbols for thousands of years.
Two stones stand out for rings. Jade has been treasured in Chinese culture for millennia, and turquoise is one of the oldest protective talismans on earth; both are often paired with good-luck symbols, the four-leaf clover among the best known.

Jade or turquoise: which ring is for you?
Jade, 玉 (yù), is the stone of serenity and good fortune in Chinese tradition. It is given to mark births, weddings and milestones, and is traditionally believed to attract luck and harmony. Turquoise has been worn as a talisman in Egypt, Persia, Tibet and the American Southwest. In crystal lore it is a stone of protection and purification, and it is the December birthstone. Choose turquoise for protection, friendship and safe travels.
The four-leaf clover ties them together. In Irish folklore its four leaves stand for faith, hope, love and luck, and finding one is famously rare.
Which hand to wear a gemstone ring on
Crystal tradition treats the left hand as receiving and the right as protecting. Our crystal guides suggest the left hand for stones of prosperity and love, such as citrine and green aventurine, and the right hand for protective stones. By that convention, a jade ring worn for good fortune sits on the left, and a turquoise ring worn for protection sits on the right. Practicality matters too: a softer stone lasts longer on the hand you use less.
Rings and everyday wear
Rings take more knocks than any other piece, so it helps to know your stone. Turquoise is fairly soft, around 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, and porous, so keep it away from water, soap and hand cream. Jade is only moderately hard, around 6 to 7, but exceptionally tough, because its tiny crystals interlock like felt; it resists chipping better than many harder gems. Either way, take rings off for housework, gardening and the gym, and before using hand sanitiser or cleaning products.
Caring for your ring
Wipe jade with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it; wipe turquoise with a soft, dry cloth only. Store each ring in its own pouch so harder stones cannot scratch it, and keep silver in an airtight bag to slow tarnish in Singapore’s humidity. Our silver care guide has more. Which hand should I wear a jade ring on?
In the crystal tradition our guides follow, stones of prosperity and good fortune are worn on the left, the receiving hand. Many people also simply choose the hand where the ring is least likely to be knocked.
Can I wear a turquoise ring every day?
Yes, with care. Turquoise is soft and porous, so take it off for washing up, showering, swimming and applying lotion, and wipe it with a soft, dry cloth.
