Crystal Necklaces

A stone worn at the throat or over the heart: the oldest way to carry a crystal, and still the most personal.

Long before bracelets, people wore their stones on a cord around the neck: amulets, seals and talismans resting close to the heart. A crystal necklace still carries that feeling. It sits where you can touch it without thinking and, in crystal tradition, keeps a stone near the heart and throat, the energy centres of love and of honest speech.

One classic pairing sets deep red garnet with clear quartz beads, a combination that is warm, easy to wear and quietly striking with anything from a white shirt to an evening dress. Garnet is the January birthstone and a traditional stone of passion and courage; clear quartz is said to amplify whatever it is worn with.

On this page: why some stones are traditionally worn at the neck, how to choose a gemstone necklace, how to layer, and how to look after a necklace in Singapore’s heat and humidity.

A short guide

Choosing and wearing

Why wear a crystal as a necklace

Some stones are traditionally worn at the neck rather than on the wrist. In crystal practice, a necklace places a stone over the throat chakra, linked with communication, or over the heart. That is why our crystal guides suggest wearing aquamarine, sodalite and chrysocolla as necklaces, and rhodochrosite and dioptase over the heart. Lapis lazuli works either way, on the left wrist or at the neck.

How to choose a gemstone necklace

  • Start with meaning. Garnet for passion and courage, aquamarine for calm and clear speech, rose quartz for love. Our crystal meanings guide sets out what each stone is said to hold.
  • Think about the neckline. A beaded strand sits beautifully against a round or boat neck; a single pendant suits an open collar or a V-neck.
  • Consider the colour. Deep stones such as garnet read richly by day and glow by candlelight; pale stones such as aquamarine and moonstone are softer and fresher.
  • Choose a birthstone. A birthstone necklace is one of the most personal gifts there is. See birthstones by month.

Layering necklaces

A crystal strand layers well with a fine chain. Keep the lengths clearly different so the pieces sit apart rather than tangle, and let one necklace lead: a bold beaded strand with something delicate above it, or a single pendant with a plain chain below. Keep to one or two stone colours so the look stays calm.

Caring for a crystal necklace

Put your necklace on last, after perfume, hairspray and sunscreen, and take it off first. Sweat and cosmetics slowly dull a stone’s polish, especially in Singapore’s humidity. Wipe the beads with a soft cloth after wearing, and lay the necklace flat or hang it rather than coiling it tightly, so the stringing does not kink. Store it apart from other pieces: garnet and quartz are hard enough to scratch softer stones and silver. Take it off before swimming, showering or sleeping. FAQ

Questions, answered

Can I wear a crystal necklace every day?

Yes. Garnet and quartz are both hard stones that suit daily wear. Put the necklace on after perfume and take it off before swimming, showering or sleeping.

Which crystals are best worn as a necklace?

In crystal tradition, stones linked with the throat and heart: aquamarine, sodalite, chrysocolla and lapis lazuli at the throat, and rhodochrosite and dioptase over the heart. Garnet at the neck is traditionally worn for warmth and courage.

Is a garnet necklace a good gift?

It is a thoughtful one. Garnet is the January birthstone and, in crystal lore, a stone of love and devotion, so it suits a January birthday or an anniversary.

Should I take my crystal necklace off at night?

Yes. It is kinder to the stringing and to the stones, and it keeps the necklace from tangling or catching while you sleep.
