What is clear quartz?

Clear quartz is the pure, colourless form of quartz, also called rock crystal, and in crystal tradition it is the all-purpose stone for clarity and focus. Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on earth; when it grows without the trace elements that tint amethyst or citrine, the result is this water-clear stone. The ancient Greeks called it krystallos, “ice”, believing it was water frozen so hard it could never melt, and it gave us the word “crystal”.

Clear quartz forms six-sided prisms ending in a point, and grows as single points, clusters and large masses. Fine material comes from Brazil, Madagascar and Arkansas in the United States, among many other places. Natural pieces often hold wisps, veils or tiny rainbows where light catches internal fractures; perfectly flawless stones are rarer. In Chinese it is 白水晶 (bái shuǐ jīng), “white crystal”.

Clear quartz meaning

Clear quartz is known in crystal lore as the “master healer”, a nickname for its reputation as the most versatile of all crystals rather than any medical power. It is traditionally believed to amplify energy and thought, as well as the effect of other crystals, and to bring balance and a sense of renewal to every part of life. Because it is associated with every chakra, and especially the crown, many practitioners consider it suitable for everyone, whatever their star sign.

In everyday terms, clear quartz is the stone of clarity: a clear head for study and work, and a clear sense of what you want. Many people choose it as a first crystal because it asks nothing in particular of you except an intention to hold. Others keep it simply as a reminder to pause, breathe and see a situation as it really is.

How to wear clear quartz

Wear clear quartz on your left hand, or pair it with other stones to boost them. In crystal practice the left side is the receiving side, so a clear quartz bracelet on the left wrist is said to help you take in its clarity. Because it is thought to amplify the crystals around it, clear quartz is the classic companion stone: a few beads added to a strand of amethyst, rose quartz or citrine are said to strengthen their intention.

The same idea works in a necklace, where clear quartz beads set beside deep red garnet are said to amplify its warmth and courage. Clear quartz at home and in feng shui

In feng shui, clear quartz is used to bring clarity and fresh energy to a space. Points and clusters are placed on desks and in study corners, and a clear quartz sphere is traditionally said to help energy circulate in a stagnant or cluttered corner. In many homes across Asia, a clear quartz cluster also plays a part in crystal care: people rest their other bracelets and stones on it overnight, a method traditionally believed to cleanse and recharge them.

Caring for clear quartz

At 7 on the Mohs scale, clear quartz is hard and suits everyday wear. It can still chip if knocked against a hard surface, so store it separately from other jewellery.

• Keep spheres out of the sun. A clear quartz sphere can focus sunlight like a magnifying glass, so never leave one on a sunny windowsill.
• Clean simply. Warm water with a little mild soap and a soft cloth restores its sparkle; dry it well.
• Mind the elastic. In Singapore’s humidity, take bracelets off before swimming or showering, and restring them when the elastic starts to slacken.

To check that a piece is genuine, look closely. Natural quartz usually shows small wisps or veils inside and feels cool to the touch, while tiny round bubbles are a sign of glass.
