What is amethyst?

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, the birthstone for February, and one of the best-loved crystals for calm and focus. Its colour comes from traces of iron in the quartz, altered over long periods by natural gamma rays from the surrounding rock. The result ranges from a soft lilac to a deep, velvety royal purple, often with zones of stronger colour within a single stone.

Brazil and Uruguay are famous for the large amethyst geodes, lined with sparkling crystals, that decorate many Singapore homes and offices, while Zambia produces some of the deepest-coloured stones. Amethyst and citrine are close relatives: heating amethyst turns it golden, which is how much of the citrine on the market is made. The name comes from the Greek amethystos, “not intoxicated”, from an ancient belief that the stone kept its wearer sober. In Chinese it is 紫水晶 (zǐ shuǐ jīng), “purple crystal”.

Amethyst meaning

In crystal tradition, amethyst is a meditative and calming stone. It is traditionally believed to bring calm, balance, patience and peace, emotionally, spiritually and in everyday life. Many people reach for it when life feels loud: during exams, a demanding season at work, or simply at the end of a long day. Linked with the third eye and crown chakras, it is also associated with intuition, clear thinking and a quieter, more focused mind.

Its ancient link with sobriety has given it a gentler modern meaning: a stone of moderation, good judgement and resisting excess. In Chinese homes and businesses, large amethyst geodes are popular in feng shui, where they are said to gather and hold good energy. How to wear amethyst

Caring for amethyst

At 7 on the Mohs scale, amethyst is hard enough for everyday wear, but it can chip if knocked. Store it apart from harder stones and metal pieces.

• Keep it out of strong sun. Amethyst’s colour can fade with long exposure to direct sunlight and heat, so avoid leaving bracelets or geodes on a sunny windowsill.
• Clean gently. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth or wash in lukewarm water with a little mild soap, then dry well.
• Mind the elastic. In Singapore’s humidity, take bracelets off before swimming or showering, and restring when the elastic begins to slacken.
